Sydney's Mardi Gras is a fantabulous black hole into which sparkly taxpayer dollars disappear
I always thought Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was a raging success.
But it turns out the event is a fantabulous money pit into which sparkly taxpayer dollars are tossed by woke politicians who don’t know how to say no.
The Daily Telegraph reported today that the city’s annual LGBTQ+ parade is facing million dollar loses, and is only being kept afloat by long suffering taxpayers.
The Mardi Gras organisation will record a $1.095 million deficit at June this year, and taxpayers are being asked to help out. Again.
The latest plea for cash comes after the February parade was saved by a $1.1m injection from the state government and City of Sydney Council.
That particular injection came after “two pre-event payments to improve cashflow during the 2024 festival period”.
A Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras media release blamed “cost of living pressures”.
Tell me about it!
But why should ratepayers put their hand in their pockets so a small group of people can parade through the city boasting about their sexual preferences?
Get Qantas to pay for it.
Or, like the rest of us, the Mardi Gras organisers could always work within their budget and live within their means.
There is a great irony here, of course. An event that claims to be all about equality demands special treatment in order to exist.
Well, why not grant them equality and provide them with the exact same funding other private festivals get - nothing.
Sydney’s Mayor Clover Moore told the Telegraph …
“We are proud to stand with the Mardi Gras Festival and help ensure its sustainability into the future.”
Sustainability? The festival has existed since 1978. If it hasn’t learned to be sustainable by now, it never will.
NSW Minister for the Arts John Graham said …
“It has become an important celebration of inclusion and community, each parade adds to its history.”
Making half of NSW pay for an event they disapprove of and regard as an embarrassment to the city is a heck of a way to celebrate “inclusion and community”.
We can’t afford to house our citizens, but we can afford to pump more and more money into an LGBTQ+ black hole. Tells you everything you need to know about our political elites.
Imagine the uproar if say, any tax dollars were given to Australia's Christians so they could have a march...my goodness, heads would roll! The circus would well and truly arrive in town with plenty of self funded opposition to that! "How dare a government give our tax dollars to those regressive numpties stupid enough to believe in a magic sky fairy!" they would cry..."We have all the fairying covered thank you very much!...and give that money to us...thank you!"
Inclusively and with all equality...the (new) Australian way.
Nothing shouts diversity, equity and inclusion louder than handouts from leftist idealogues in power desperate to signal their virtue, ignore an enormous cohort of their electorate (who also happen to be their employers) and waste vast sums of hard earned taxpayer funds on pointless parades promoting sexual preferences, predilections and perversions.
Another outstanding example of financial dereliction of duty.
