Anthony Albanese’s worst nightmare has come true.
A convicted sex predator, released from detention just weeks ago, has been charged with the indecent assault of a woman in Adelaide.
Heads must roll.
The Afghan refugee released from long term detention last month allegedly assaulted a woman at a motel in Adelaide on Saturday where he was staying on the taxpayer dime.
The man has a history of violent sexual assaults, and was once described by a sentencing judge as “a danger to the community”.
He was one of 141 dangerous non-citizens released into the community after the High Court ruled that long term detention was unlawful.
The Albanese Government suspected the High Court would rule the way it did, but failed to prepare any alternative legislation to keep murderers, rapists and child sex offenders from being let loose.
Now a woman has allegedly been indecently assaulted by one of those former detainees.
The government is directly responsible for this situation, a situation that should never have been allowed the first place.
The non citizen who allegedly assaulted the woman has been remanded in custody to appear in court next year.
So it will be months before we find out the truth of the allegations, but Australian citizens should never have been put at risk.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil cannot keep her job. She has failed spectacularly.
The same goes for Immigration Minister Andrew Giles. Both of them should be sitting on the backbench by the end of today.
If they are not, then all the focus group polling about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being a weak, insipid leader who cannot make hard decisions will have been proved true.
Even a “beta male” - as Albanese was labelled in polling released yesterday - has to man up occasionally.
Andrew Giles and Clare O’Neil failed to prepare for the High Court ruling, claiming they didn’t think the Commonwealth would lose.
And then they claimed they couldn’t prepare alternate legislation until the High Court had released the reasons for its decision.
When Giles and O’Neil finally, belatedly, presented legislation to the Parliament, the dangerous detainees were in the community.
O’Neil made laws requiring the former detainees to wear tracking devices. But then she couldn’t say how many former detainees were wearing them, or even where all the former detainees were.
Through it all, Giles and O’Neil kept insisting that the safety of Australians was front of mind.
Now an Australian woman has allegedly been indecently assaulted.
Albanese must keep that front of mind when deciding the fate of his two ministers whose only job was to protect Australians; a job they have completely stuffed up, with devastating consequences.
If Giles and O’Neil are allowed to keep their jobs, Albanese has zero chance of keeping his at the next election.
Time for “handsome boy” to actually show some leadership.
So we have a bunch of dimwits in Canberra that cannot foresee an obvious issue with detainees that may be a risk to the community, but they can ram through bills that are 1000 pages long and include legislation pertaining to digital IDs that will likely affect all of us. No real thought about why they are there to represent. No consideration that 69% of the population didn’t put them as fist choice...
Didn’t Whitlam get dismissed for, less than this....?
This really is just an appalling situation...
Profound and deep incompetence is the hallmark of this government. I cannot quite believe how incompetent they are. If Macron has noticed then we are in deep trouble. France is a complete mess under his regime.
