Sport's Two-Tiered Policing of Gay Pride Celebration
Why Muslims can opt out of the LGBTQ roadshow, but Christians cannot
Muslims are allowed to opt out while Christians are sanctioned for their beliefs when it comes to sports promotion of Gay Pride.
Take the case of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi who was required to wear an LGBTQ armband in his English Premier League game at the weekend.
The committed Christian, and son of a pastor, wore the Pride band but wrote on it: “I love Jesus”.
When he was threatened with punishment for bearing a religious slogan he changed it to “Jesus loves you”. After all, if the Premier League is celebrating inclusion, you can’t get more inclusive than that!
But as it turns out, you can have a little too much inclusion after all.
Guehi now faces sanction under Football Association rules that ban players from bearing religious or political slogans.
I’m just trying to work out whether the Rainbow Flag is political or religious. It’s hard to tell. But I digress …
