Fashion house Ralph Lauren has apologised to Mexicans after being accused of plagiarising indigenous culture in their latest design.
The US company claimed it was “surprised” to see a garment inspired by indigenous stripes and patterns still on sale after a “stern directive” had been given to remove it from stores.
A Ralph Lauren spokeswoman said the company was “deeply sorry this happened”.
The Mexican President’s wife Beatriz Gutiérrez shared an image on her social media of a garment featuring stripes and patterns bearing a Ralph Lauren label.
She claimed "copying" these patterns was plagiarism, which she described as "illegal and immoral".
I couldn’t agree more. Mexico own ugly stripes!
And it’s about time white people learned to wear white clothes?
Ms Gutierrez did not say whether she would stop using electricity, and phones, and motor cars, and indoor plumbing.
What on earth were Ralph Lauren thinking!
That is the ugliest piece of clothing I have seen this week!
I wonder if one day we will wake up to the realisation that everything started somewhere and maybe anything we didn't personally invent is some kind of appropriation. I mean seriously, where does this end?
