There was always going to come a point where the sex appeal would wane and the shock value would grow tedious, leaving Madonna as a talentless husk.
And here we are.
The announcement of Madge’s 40th anniversary tour left me fantasising about a poke in the eye with sharp stick
The idea of watching a 64-year-old woman writhe around in her underwear singing about how she’s Like a Virgin between stints on a dialysis machine is not exactly appealing.
Madonna was a big hit in the 80s. But she never had the talent of a Cher or a Dolly Parton to sustain our interest. The 40-year anniversary of her career comes 39 years after she is past her prime.
On the plus side, the announcement confirms that she is not dead. And confirmation was needed because recent photos make it look as if she had been embalmed.
Does she have the energy for 40 concerts across America and Europe? Will her face be able to handle this tour? Who knows.
The one trick pony posed for Vanity Fair to promote her upcoming tour, replicating religious iconography including references to the Virgin Mary as well as to The Last Supper.
Why doesn’t she ever pose as Khadijah (or Aisha)?
Why does she never create an iconic image of herself receiving the Koran from the archangel? It’s a mystery.
She wouldn’t dare be so sacrilegious to any other religion. If she did a photo shoot as Mo, I wouldn’t give her a week.
So edgy.
Yeah, nah.
She’s still trying so hard to shock. But Madonna already staged a variation of this years ago. At this point she's essentially copying herself.
The old “look at meee look at meee” routine doesn't work anymore. It’s embarrassing. Virgin on the ridiculous.
It was cool to be edgy in the 80s. It’s cringe in the 20s. It doesn’t help when the person is in her 60s.
If she really wants to shock the world, all she needs to do is show an unfiltered photo of herself. That would be far more shocking than this predictable blaspheming of the Catholic Church.
Anyway, Madonna is nothing if not proof that some things never change. And weirdly enough, that is kind of reassuring actually.
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
I have never been much of a Madonna fan. I always felt she was trying so hard to get attention with her revolting behaviour that perhaps there was a deficit in actual talent. Sad to see an old woman unable to accept the inevitable.
