Churches back drug injecting room in the Melbourne CBD
I know the Psalmist refers to Him as the “Lord most High”, but is that really a reason for churches to back drug injecting rooms in Melbourne’s CBD?
Four Melbourne churches yesterday called on the Victorian Premier to open a new injecting room in the city.
A new facility would be in addition to the existing one in Richmond, controversially built next to a primary school.
Leaders of the churches - Collins St Baptist, Wesley Uniting, St Michael’s Uniting and St John’s Lutheran - told Premier Jacinta Allan the need for a second drug injecting room was “urgent”.
They said …
“Motivated by the call of our faith to love God and neighbour and our enduring Christian commitment to justice and the sanctity of life, we remain committed to ensuring Melbourne is a place that nurtures the wellbeing of all its citizens, including those most vulnerable.”
Okay. I must admit, I don’t see the nexus between love of God and the desire to provide a taxpayer funded environment where heroin addicts can shoot up without fear of arrest.
Sure, Stephen got stoned.
And yes, King Nebuchadnezzar was on grass for seven years.
But is that really an argument for more state facilitated drug injecting rooms?
