TOM Hanks has told New York Times Magazine that today only a gay actor could play the role that earned him an Oscar in the 1993 film Philadelphia.
And here I was thinking that “acting” was playing a person other than yourself.
Some of the best gay roles have been played by straight actors. Hanks himself proves the point!
Other straight actors like Matthew McConaughey and Rami Malek come immediately to mind. They both won Oscars for their portrayals of gay men.
Conversely, Rock Hudson broke the hearts of straight women around the world when it was revealed he was gay. He played tall, dark, handsome straight men in his many movies, and very convincingly too!
There are plenty of straight actresses who have played the roles of lesbians. Kate Winslet is one.
Merit and the talent of actors that must prevail. Otherwise we will be doomed to movie mediocrity.
It's called acting for a reason.
Newsflash: Tom Hanks to give back his two Oscars for Philidelphia & Forest Gump due to the totally fake reasons he wasn't a real fairdinkum gay in the first movie nor on the spectrum in the second one. Nah, not really, it's all just an act.
